Basic Violet 3, also commonly known as Crystal Violet or Gentian Violet, is a classic triphenylmethane basic dye featuring brilliant coloring performance, unique chemical properties and a wide range of applications.
Appearance & Physicochemical Properties
Dark green crystalline powder with metallic luster
Soluble in water, ethanol and chloroform; its aqueous solution shows bright bluish-violet color; slightly soluble in ether
- In concentrated sulfuric acid: Orange-red color, turns green first then violet upon dilution
- Adding NaOH to aqueous solution: Reddish-brown precipitate forms
- pH indicator range: 0.5 (green) ~ 2.0 (bluish-violet), applied in non-aqueous titration
