Core Principle
The key difference between reactive dyes and other dyes (such as direct dyes or vat dyes) lies in their chemical reactivity.
The dye dissolves in water and is adsorbed by the fibers. Under alkaline conditions (usually using soda ash or caustic soda) and at a certain temperature, the active groups on the dye molecules react chemically with fiber molecules (such as the hydroxyl groups -OH on cellulose fibers or the amino groups -NH₂ on protein fibers), forming covalent bonds.
