Victoria Blue B with C.I. Basic Blue 26
Product Introduction
Basic Blue 26 is a triarylmethane cationic dye, also commonly known as Victoria Blue B.
Physical & Chemical Properties
1. Appearance: Dark purple or grey-green lustrous powder
2. Solubility
- Soluble in both cold and hot water, forming bright blue aqueous solution;
- Highly soluble in ethanol and methanol with blue alcoholic solution;
- Soluble in DMSO, insoluble in alkane solvents.
3. Color Reaction with Acid & Alkali
- In concentrated sulfuric acid: reddish-brown; turns yellow, then green, finally blue after dilution with water;
- In concentrated nitric acid: olive green;
- Dark reddish-brown precipitate generates when NaOH is added to dye aqueous solution;
- Blue precipitate generates when hydrochloric acid is added to dye aqueous solution.
4. Spectral Property: Maximum absorption wavelength λmax = 593~619 nm
5. Thermal Data
- Melting point: 206 °C (decomposed)
- Boiling point: 620.4 °C (760 mmHg)
- Flash point: 70 °C
6. Stability: Hygroscopic powder; store hermetically away from light at ambient temperature
Synthesis Process
Condensation reaction between tetramethyl Michler’s ketone and N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine catalyzed by phosphorus oxychloride, followed by hydrolysis, purification, salting-out, drying and crushing to obtain finished product.
Main Application Fields
(1) Stationery & Ink Industry (Primary Application)
Colorant for carbon paper, typewriter stencil paper, ballpoint pen ink, marker ink, blue writing ink, glazed paper and colored paper, featuring transparent tint and pure blue shade.
(2) Textile Dyeing (Cationic Dye)
Suitable for dyeing silk, wool, tannin-mordanted cotton, linen and acrylic fiber, mainly applied to lightweight decorative fabrics.
Disadvantage: Light fastness only Grade 1~2, poor wash fastness, not applicable for outdoor weather-resistant textiles.
(3) Natural Material Coloring for Light Industry
Dyeing bamboo, wood, leather and feather; raw material for manufacturing blue lake pigments.
(4) Biological Laboratory Staining
Histological section staining, bacterial and cell nuclear staining; cationic structure binds with nucleic acid DNA/RNA to form distinct blue nucleus; weak fluorescence property available for microscopic observation.
Safety & Storage/Transportation
1. Hazard Property: Toxic cationic dye, irritant to eyes and chronically toxic to aquatic organisms;
2. Protection Requirement: Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes; wear goggles and gloves during operation;
3. Storage & Transport Condition: Hermetically sealed storage in cool, dry warehouse, keep away from strong acid and alkali; prohibited to store and transport together with food and feed.
Product Performance Summary
Advantages: Excellent water & alcohol solubility, pure bright blue shade, strong penetration, ideal for ink and tissue section staining;
Disadvantages: Extremely low light and wash fastness, only suitable for indoor short-term-use products.
