Victoria Pure Blue BO with C.I. Basic Blue 7
Product Introduction
Basic Blue 7 is an organic compound mainly used as a blue dye. It belongs to the triarylmethane dye class and is also known as Basic Brilliant Blue BO or Victoria Pure Blue BO.
Physical & Chemical Properties
1. Appearance: Brown or reddish lustrous blue powder
2. Solubility
- Slightly soluble in cold water, freely soluble in hot water to form bright blue solution
- Highly soluble in ethanol and methanol, yielding blue alcoholic solution
- Insoluble in hydrocarbon solvents
3. Color Change Reactions
- Dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid: tan solution; turns reddish yellow upon dilution with water
- Red-brown precipitate forms when sodium hydroxide is added to aqueous dye solution
4. Spectral Property: Maximum absorption wavelength λmax = 619 nm
5. Thermal Data: Boiling point 612.2 °C (760 mmHg), flash point 324 °C
6. Stability: Hygroscopic powder; store hermetically at ambient temperature
Synthesis Process
Synthesized by condensation of tetraethyl Michler’s ketone and N-ethyl-1-naphthylamine catalyzed by phosphorus oxychloride, followed by hydrolysis, salting-out and refining to obtain finished product.
Main Application Fields
(1) Stationery & Ink Industry (Primary Application)
- Colorant for ballpoint pen ink, blue writing ink, marker ink, typewriter stencil paper, carbon paper and glazed paper
- Paper tinting, delivering bright and smooth writing shade
(2) Textile Dyeing (Cationic Dye)
- Applicable to silk, wool, tannin-mordanted cotton and acrylic fiber
- Silk over-dyeing process: base dye with direct turquoise blue then top-dye with this product for unique vivid shade
- Drawback: Poor light fastness and wash fastness, mainly used for decorative and lightweight fabrics
(3) Light Industry Natural Material Coloring
Dyeing of bamboo, wood, leather and feather with excellent penetration; raw material for manufacturing blue lake pigments
(4) Biological & Laboratory Staining
Histological section staining, bacterial and blood cell staining; cationic structure enables binding to nucleic acids and proteins; minor usage as raw material for hair dye colorants
Safety & Storage/Transportation
1. Hazard Classification: Class 6.1 toxic substance, UN transport ID 3143, Packing Group III
2. Protection Measures: S24/25, avoid direct contact with skin and eyes; risk of severe eye damage and chronic aquatic toxicity
3. Storage & Transport: Sealed storage in cool and dry warehouse, keep away from strong acid and alkali; separate from food raw materials.
Industry Performance Summary
Advantages: Bright color, pure blue shade, outstanding alcohol solubility, ideal for inks and pale silk fabrics
Disadvantages: Low light fastness, not suitable for outdoor textiles or fabrics requiring high wash resistance
